When I was a kid, I played a tooooon of video games. So many I usually became nocturnal during summer breaks. My dad, who usually woke up early for work at 4 am, would often find me in my room, playing my last couple hours of whatever game I had before I went to sleep for the day. I don’t know that I’d go back to having such a weird sleep schedule — it was awful every year reversing it when school was back — but I do miss having all that time to play some of my favorites.
And while I don’t have as much time to play some of the classics, there are luckily a lot of remakes, remasters, and sequels of some of my favorite games on the Nintendo Switch. So, even now I can pick up a game and feel the nostalgia as I relive bits and pieces of my childhood. Here are some of my latest favorites for you to enjoy — either for the first or second time.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
A classic on the Game Boy, Link’s Awakening for the Switch has been given a major facelift while still keeping the gameplay and story it was originally known for. I had a blast revisiting this game and the cutesy art style only adds to the experience. The puzzles in this game are as hard as I remember them as a kid, so they may take some getting used to, especially if you haven’t played any of the original Zelda series. But if you stick with it, you’ll definitely think it’s worth the effort.

WarioWare: Get It Together!
Having played WarioWare for the GameCube and loving that game, I was excited to give the Switch edition of the series a shot. And I’m happy to report this sequel is as fun as the old one! It’s also really easy to pick up and put down which is a big plus to me; even if you only have a couple minutes, you — and, if you want, a friend — can play as Wario and friends as they complete all sorts of goofy minigames.

New Pokémon Snap
If you are even mildly interested in watching birds or nature, you’ll like New Pokémon Snap. In this sequel to the original N64 game, you take on the role of a photographer assisting Professor Mirror and his assistants Rita and Phil in their research of Pokémon. With your camera in hand and a couple of other tools, you’ll travel various lands, snap lots of photos, and, of course, see lots of Pokémon as you learn all about their habits!

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom — Rehydrated
While originally released on Gamecube, this remake on the Switch stays pretty faithful to the original release, changing not a whole lot other than giving it some graphical upgrades. In this game, Plankton sends an army of robots to wreak havoc all over Bikini Bottom, leaving its fate up to you! Playing as SpongeBob, Sandy, and Patrick, you’ll use each of their different abilities to collect golden spatulas and kick some robot butt, all while running into many familiar faces from the TV show.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
With a series as old as Mario Kart, there’s not much to be said other than you know you’ll be in for a good time, no matter which version you play. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe keeps the fun going with some great race courses ranging from as simple as Moo Moo Meadows to as wild as Rainbow Road. You and three of your other friends will have a blast going fast!
